Use linen and jute string. Burlap threads are too wide and rough. Tan linen can get the same fray effect, but its softer on your face and not as scraggly looking-- unless you make it to look that way. Razor blade works. Its also stronger.

I made those nasty grease stains with water diluted with black acrylic paint. Take a bowl or a fake foam head and then fold in the places where you want stitches to form the shape (MAKE IT LOOSE). Just form a dome-- don't worry about the contour of your jaw, you'll use rope to tie that in. Use an organic grass rope similar to the jute string color. Prickly and nasty beats clean synthetic as far as appearance goes.

I scratched the eye holes in by swiping a razor blade over the marked eye spots in an up and down motion (on the table, not your face lolol). Don't cut round holes with scissors, it makes it look constructed rather than worn in.

A tip on the mouth-- make a fold you intend to have a stitch in, do it tight on the sides, but when you get to the middle, gauge your stitches wide like in your photo reference, then go back to tight. The mouth should dip down into a fold. I made a tack at the mouth to make a wrinkle fall naturally at the chin.

This project shouldn't take too long. Don't freak out if you don't get all the stitches verbatim from the photo. Get the major ones and it'll look kickin'.
